This article will cover the Grading Period Type and the Grading Period Setting, as well as their functions.
Grading Period Type
The Grading Period Type indicates the grading period for the assignments or exams for a Session.
For example, an exam could be split into two parts (Mid-Term and Final), which in turn, will have a Mid-Term grade, as well as a Final grade.
When grading that exam, the faculty member will be able to select the Grading Period Type. Separate Grade records will be created for the Mid-Term and Final grades.
(For details on the grading component, see also: RIO Ed - Session Grading (Aura).)
The Grading Period Type can be set (and displayed) at the Term record, i.e. to indicate whether it is in the Mid-Term, or Finals, etc.
This can either be manually populated, or set automatically according to the dates. See the following information below.
Grading Period Setting
The Grading Period Setting object (introduced in v3.9) allows admin to configure the locking behavior and actions allowed for a Grading Period Type.
Displaying the Grading Period Type in a Term
Instead of having to manually populate the Grading Period Type in the Term object, users can create a Grading Period Setting to define what gets displayed and when.
For example, you would want the Term's 'Grading Period Type' field to show 'Mid-Term Grade' for the whole of next month.
To do this, head to the 'Grading Period Settings' tab in the related Term, and create a new record.
Set the Grading Period Type and the duration it will be displayed, i.e. for the whole of next month.
Note: If the time defined (i.e. next month) hasn't arrived yet, the status in the grading component will be locked to prevent input. Faculty members will not be able to grade an exam for the Mid-Term period, if the period has not arrived yet.
When that defined time arrives (i.e. next month), the 'Grading Period Type' in that Term will automatically be set accordingly.
Setting a Grading Period Type as 'Current'
Users can also choose to set and display a Grading Period Type for the Term, even before the defined time arrives.
For example, the time defined for the Mid-Terms might not have arrived yet (i.e. next month), but users may want it be set for the Term record now.
Check/tick the 'Current' checkbox to override any existing Grading Period Type for a Term, and make this specific Grading Period Type as the current one instead.
If set as current, any other Grading Period Settings (for that same Term) that has 'Current' checked, will be unchecked. There can be only one 'Current' Grading Period Type at any given moment for the Term.
In a Grading Period Setting record, there are three actions (checkboxes) under the 'Settings' section, which allows the user to set what actions can be taken when grading students:
- Allow Notes.
- Allow Regrade Request. **
- Allow Resit Request. **
** See also: Grade Change Request
The following three options (if enabled) will be reflected in the grading component, when grading student's assignments or exams in the Session.
