RIO Challenge v4 - C02.06 - Study Program Setup
Program structure is one of the most important aspects in data setup, as it will outline the courses that students will need to take.
Some courses may be mandatory/required, while others may be elective/optional.
There may also be elective groups, that allow students to select any course within that group, as long as they have selected enough to meet the credit requirements for completion.
Follow this exercise to find out how to set up a program structure.
Learning outcomes
- Understand where and how to set up program structure.
- Understand how to add Study Units into a program (i.e. define which courses are part of the program).
- Understand how to set mandatory and elective courses.
What does success look like?
- Able to add Study Units into the program structure.
- Able to set some Study Units as required, and some as optional.
Related challenges
Enrollment requirements for specific Study Units are defined within the program structure. See:

Steps to complete the challenge
The program administrator at RIO University is finalising the program structure of the Undergraduate Program, for the ‘Foundation Core’ and ‘AoE’ groups.

The ‘Foundation Core’ group contains the core Study Units (courses), whereby students must take all of the Study Units in this group.
There is also a group named ‘AoE’. It contains sub-groups, each offering multiple Study Units.
This is an elective group, where students can select any Study Units, as long as they earn 28 credits.
However, they must select enough Study Units from each sub-group to complete them (4 credits from each sub-group).
This is to ensure that students will have sufficient exposure to each topic (i.e. humanities, social science, arts, etc.).
- Click on the 'RIO Challenge v4' tab at the bottom left of the page. Click on 'Initiate Challenge' to generate the data required for this challenge.

- From the App Launcher at the top left of the page, search for ‘Study Programs’.

Select the list view ‘C02.06 - Study Program Setup’ and open the record created for this challenge.
- The Study Program is a record that represents an academic program, which in this case, is the Undergraduate Program.
Navigate to the ‘Versions’ tab, and click to open the Study Plan ‘C02.06 - RIO Undergraduate Program Plan’.
- The Study Plan is a record that outlines the program structure.
These include the courses that students must take, and what are their enrollment requirements (if any).
Review the Study Plan details.
The ‘Total Required Credits’ field is where you will define how many credits students must earn in order to complete the program, which in this case is 120 credits.
This is the default Study Plan that students will enroll to (Default = TRUE), and is an active ongoing one (Status = Active).
- Navigate to the ‘Program Structure’ tab and review the Study Plan Structures. There are 4 groups (AoE, Experiential Learning Courses, Foundation Core, and Specialisations).

- Navigate to the ‘Configuration’ tab and find the list of Study Plan Structure records.
These are the records that were displayed in the ‘Program Structure’ tab you saw earlier in the previous step.
The program administrator is finalising the ‘Foundation Core’ and ‘AoE’ groups.
- Click to enter into the ‘C02.06 - Foundation Core’ group and review its details.
This is a group record (Record Type = Group).
This group is required for program completion (Category = Required).
Students must earn 12 credits from this group to complete it (Credits = 12.0000).

- Navigate to the ‘Group Structure’ tab, and review the list of Study Plan Structure (Unit) records.
These are the Study Units (courses) that make up this group.
All of them are required, and carry 2 credits each.
However, there are only 5 Units, so 5 x 2 = 10 credits.
Since the ‘Foundation Core’ requires 12 credits, we need to add another Unit.
- Click on ‘New’ to create a new Study Plan Structure (Unit).

Remember that this is a core course, which means it is a required one.
| Record Type | Unit |
| Study Plan Structure Name | C02.06 - AC104 - Advanced Composition Studies |
| Study Plan | C02.06 - RIO Undergraduate Program Plan |
| Parent Study Plan Structure | C02.06 - Foundation Core |
| Study Unit | C02.06 - AC104 - Advanced Composition Studies |
| Category | Required |
| Credits | 2 |
- Review the list of Study Plan Structure (Unit) records again.
There are now 6 Units.
6 x 2 = 12 credits, thus, there are enough credits to complete this Group.
- While still in the ‘C02.06 - Foundation Core’ record, click on the ‘Study Plan’ field, to return to the ‘C02.06 - RIO Undergraduate Program Plan’.

- Once inside the Study Plan record, navigate to the ‘Configuration’ tab and review the list of Study Plan Structures.
This time, we need to finalise the ‘AoE’ group.
- Click to enter into the ‘C02.06 - AoE’ group and review its details.
This is a group record (Record Type = Group).
This group is required for program completion (Category = Required).
Students must earn 28 credits from this group to complete it (Credits = 28.0000).
Those 28 credits need to come from all its 5 sub-groups.
At least 4 credits need to come from each sub-group.
In other words, students must complete at least 4 credits for each sub-group, but have a total of 28 credits.
- Navigate to the ‘Group Structure’ tab, and review the list of Study Plan Structure (Group) records.
These are the sub-groups (i.e. Humanities Exploration, Global Exploration, etc.).
- Click to enter into the ‘C02.06 - Humanities Exploration’ sub-group and review its details.
This is a group record (Record Type = Group).
Even though this group contains elective courses, the group itself is required for program completion (Category = Required).
Students must earn 4 credits from this group to complete it (Credits = 4.0000).
- Navigate to the ‘Group Structure’ tab, and review the list of Study Plan Structure (Unit) records.
These are the Study Units (courses) that make up this group.
All of the Units here are optional, since these are elective courses.
- The program administrator is adding another Unit to this Group.
Click on ‘New’ to create a new Study Plan Structure (Unit).
Since this is an elective course, it is optional for the student.
| Record Type | Unit |
| Study Plan Structure Name | C02.06 - CU104 - Navigating Cultures: An Introductory Cultural Inquiry |
| Study Plan | C02.06 - RIO Undergraduate Program Plan |
| Parent Study Plan Structure | C02.06 - Humanities Exploration |
| Study Unit | C02.06 - CU104 - Navigating Cultures: An Introductory Cultural Inquiry |
| Category | Optional |
| Credits | 2 |
- While still in the ‘C02.06 - Humanities Exploration’ record, click on the ‘Parent Study Plan Structure’ field to return to the ‘C02.06 - AoE’ group.

Let's review this group again.
The ‘C02.06 - AoE’ group requires students to complete 28 credits.
Students can achieve this by selecting any of the elective courses within these 4 sub-groups.
But at least 4 credits must come from each sub-group, including the ‘C02.06 - Humanities Exploration’ sub-group which we configured in the previous steps.
And with that, the RIO Undergraduate Program Plan now has all the groups and units in place.
- Congratulations, you have completed the challenge! Click on the 'RIO Challenge v4' tab at the bottom left of the page, and click on 'Complete Challenge'.
