How to Enable Faculty Members to Add Custom Grade Criteria for Sessions and Course Offerings
Table of Contents
Overview
Different institutions may adopt different grading approaches. Some institutions grade students at the Course Offering level, where all students within the offering share the same grading structure, while others grade at the Session level, allowing individual sessions to maintain their own grading requirements.
To support both approaches, RIO provides configurable options that allow faculty members to add custom Grade Criteria to the specific Course Offering or Session they teach, in addition to the standard pre-defined Grade Criteria configured by the institution at the Course level. This flexibility enables faculty to accommodate unique assessment requirements while maintaining the institution's standard grading framework.
Please refer to this article for detailed information about the related component: RIO Ed - Sessions For Grading (Aura).
How to enable faculty members to add Custom Grade Criteria for Sessions and Course Offerings
In this article, we will focus on the topic related to Custom grading criteria configuration. The configurations below allow faculty members to add additional Grade Criteria to the Course Offering and Session through the Faculty Portal.
RIO Ed - Sessions For Grading (Aura)" to the page and configure the following:
- Show Course Offering Grade Criteria = checked
- Show Session Grade Criteria = checked
- Allow Custom Grade Criteria = checked
- Allow Course Offering Custom Grade Criteria = checked
- Allow Session Custom Grade Criteria = checked
Grade Criteria can be defined at both the Course and Course Offering levels. Grade Criteria pre-defined at the Course Offering level will be inherited by all associated Sessions.

A Settings icon is available on the Grading page, allowing faculty members to manage and configure Grade Criteria as needed.

For example, if a specific Session requires additional Grade Criteria, faculty members can add them through this page as shown below.

Once saved, the additional Grade Criteria will be available for faculty members to enter and manage student grades for that Session.

These custom Grade Criteria configurations for Course Offerings can be disabled when Session-level grading is used, and vice versa. This ensures that Grade Criteria are managed based on the institution's grading requirements.
How to enable faculty members to add Custom Grade Criteria for Sessions only
The image below demonstrates the configuration when only Custom Grade Criteria for Sessions is enabled. This configuration is suitable for institutions where students enrolled in different Sessions within the same Course Offering may be assessed using different grading criteria, allowing faculty members to define assessment requirements specific to each Session.
RIO Ed - Sessions For Grading (Aura)" to the page and configure the following:
- Show Course Offering Grade Criteria = unchecked
- Show Session Grade Criteria = checked
- Allow Custom Grade Criteria = checked
- Allow Course Offering Custom Grade Criteria = unchecked
- Allow Session Custom Grade Criteria = checked

It is recommended that institutions enable only one configuration model at a time—either Course Offering-level custom Grade Criteria or Session-level custom Grade Criteria.
